Martyrs’ Day observed in Hili to honour soldiers of 1971 India-Pakistan war

BALURGHAT: South Dinajpur’s Hili commemorated Martyrs’ Day on December 12, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, who played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s liberation. The event was organised by the District Ex-Servicemen Board in collaboration with the representatives of the Indian Army and the local administration.
On this day in 1971, 468 Indian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war were cremated at the Hili football ground. To honour their memory, floral tributes were laid at the war memorial by officials, Army personnel and local citizens. The event saw the presence of South Dinajpur District Magistrate Bijin Krishna, military officers of Indian Army, NCC cadets and students from various schools.
The programme commenced with the laying of wreaths at the war memorial, followed by a patriotic cultural performance by students. Observing a moment of silence, attendees saluted the bravery of the martyrs.
During the 1971 war, Hili, located on the Indo-Bangladesh border, witnessed one of the most intense battles. Over 400 Indian soldiers were martyred in a surprise attack by Pakistani forces. In retaliation, the Indian Army inflicted heavy losses on the Pakistani troops, marking a turning point in the war.
The battle at Hili eventually led to the Indian Army’s advance toward Dhaka, culminating in the surrender of Pakistani forces on December 16, 1971 and the birth of an independent Bangladesh.
Major Sayak Choudhury, Secretary of the North and South Dinajpur District Ex-Servicemen Board, emphasised the importance of observing Martyrs’ Day.
He stated: “This is the 54th Hili War Memorial Day, commemorating the valor of the Indian Army during the 1971 war. Six battalions, including the Maratha Regiment, Garhwal Rifles and Rajput Regiment, fought bravely at
the Hili sector.
To honour the martyrs, a war memorial was established in 2007 and despite challenges, it was reconstructed in 2022. The event stands as a reminder of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of the Indian Army, whose efforts not only secured a historic victory but also inspired generations.”
