Kolkata: Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Manoj Kumar Verma on Monday launched the registration portal for the upcoming Safe Drive Save Life (SDSL), Half Marathon that is being organised by the Kolkata Police in association with the state Transport department.

The marathon will take place on February 9 through three earmarked routes for each of the segments.

On Monday, Verma launched the registration portal where the people can register for the half marathon which is a part of the SDSL awareness initiative. The marathon has three segments, 21 km, 10 km and 5 km distances. For the 21 km and 10 km, top three winners will get cash prizes while the 5 km run is meant for fun. People who wish to participate in the marathon will have to register at the website of the SDSL half marathon. The registration fees for the three segments are Rs 750, Rs 500 and Rs 250 respectively. However, if anybody registers by January 15, they will get a discount on the registration fees which has been mentioned on the registration.

The catchline of the SDSL Half Marathon is ‘Rise, Run and Reign’. After the launch of the registration portal, Verma said: “When I was the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Traffic, the annual number of fatal accidents was more than 400. After 2016, after the special drive was taken, our performance improved. Despite our areas having increased, the number of fatal accidents and the number of casualties decreased. Compared to other Metro cities, the road surface area is much less but still we are managing well. However, there is still enough scope. We can do better.”

When CP was asked about the errant two-wheeler riders on the flyovers, Verma said that not all the two-wheeler riders disobey the rules. Nobody cannot be prevented people from using the roads for a certain number of motorists who do not follow the rules.
