CM to visit Jagannath Temple today to oversee ongoing construction works

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee embarked on a 3-day tour to Digha in East Midnapore on Tuesday and will visit the Jagannath Temple on Wednesday to take stock of the ongoing construction works.

She reached Digha on Tuesday afternoon. Banerjee will visit the Jagannath temple on Wednesday and will speak to the concerned officials and also with the Trustee board.

Thousands of people, especially women, congregated near the helipad to see her. Banerjee greeted the gathering. She was also seen keeping requests for capturing selfies. The Chief Minister also showed affection to the children present there with their parents.

Banerjee took a helicopter from Howrah’s Dumurjala on Tuesday afternoon and landed at Helipad Maidan in Digha at around 2.45 pm. Trinamool Congress’ youth wing president of Contai and Contai Municipality chairman Suprakash Giri, along with other leaders, received Banerjee at the helipad ground.

She was seen speaking to Giri. Sources said that Banerjee spoke to him about the Jagannath temple. Giri confirmed Banerjee is scheduled to visit the temple on Wednesday. She has also given an instruction for working together in a united manner. Giri also claimed that a talk was also held with the Chief Minister at personal level which he would not divulge. It was learnt that the Chief Minister had given prior instruction to Giri to be present at helipad ground. The district magistrate and other officials were there to receive the Chief Minister.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee at Dumurjala helipad ground told the media that she has renamed the Drainage Canal Road adjacent to Dumurjala Stadium after legendary footballer Sailen Manna.

The Chief Minister directed the DM of Howrah to carry out renovation of the Drainage Canal Road and to also beautify the area around. She also urged the DM to consider if some stalls can be set up along the road. Banerjee will return to Kolkata on Thursday afternoon. Security has already been beefed up in and around Digha.

The temple, whose construction started in May 2022, will have idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The entire project is coming up on a 22 acre land at an approximate cost of more than Rs 150 crore.
