Badarpur struggling for basic amenities as parties clash

Badarpur assembly segment is struggling with lack of civic amenities along with enough schools and hospitals and people are set to vote on these issues during the upcoming February 7 Delhi assembly polls. Voter’s reaction as of now is mixed on their political choice among BJP, Congress and AAP, even as Arvind Kejriwal’s party is emerging as an alternative after it promised regularizing colonies.

Badarpur’s political history is replete with clash of personalities and less of political parties the political elite represent.  On the parameter of education and health the constituency has only two government run school but no hospital, residents say.

“The political fight has never been between the parties but these two candidates-- Ram Singh Netaji and Rambir Singh Bidhuri , who have switched parties often,” voters across the constituency say.

Both Netaji and Bidhuri wield personal clout in the area and have often changed political sides while AAP candidate Narayan Dutt Sharma is making the fight triangular and may even spring surprise.

Netaji was elected an MLA in 2008 on a BSP ticket but contested as Congress candidate in 2013 assembly elections. He lost the election against Bidhuri who contested as BJP candidate from this seat. Bidhuri, a former Congress MLA from the area left the party and contested as Nationalist Congress Party candidate in 2008.

On the other hand AAP candidate is new entrant in this area and has stepped up campaign in the unauthorised colonies and  JJ clusters of the constituency.

The voters of Badarpur in general may not vote only on the Chief Ministerial candidate of the political parties but also on the capacity of the candidates to deliver development for them.

Badarpur assembly is divided into four municipal wards - Jaitpur, Mithapur, Badarpur and Molarband. The constituency covers areas like Badarpur village, Molarband village, Gautum Puri, Bilaspur Camp, Mohan Baba Nagar, Hari Nagar, Saurabh Vihar, Jaitpur Extension, Tajpur village, DDA Flats Colony and Lakhpat Colony among others. The constituency has a sizeable number of Gujjar community votes who have a history of voting on caste lines. Lack of basic civic amenities like - water, sewer, open drains and roads are main issues in the rural and suburban areas. There is absence of water supply through pipelines and people have to depend upon erratic supply through tankers.

Taking cue from the prevailing issues of among the people, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal recently promised the residents to regularize the colonies like Jaitpur and Meethapur that falls in Zone-O, of Yamuna riverbed. These areas have come up on the floodplains so the construction is not allowed in these colonies.

“We will definitely allow the construction in the area and will check corruption. The police officials along with other authorities take bribe from the residents who are either constructing the building or repairing their residence. I am sure if the area is regularized it would be a great relief for the residents,” said Narayan Dutt Sharma.

Supporters of both Netaji Bidhuri claim that they have carried out several development works in the
area, including laying down cemented roads in congested lanes and opening new school during their tenures.
