But the authorities themselves have ignored the message on the hoarding as garbage and silt excavated from the drains have been lying across the industrial estate. The silt excavated from the drains have been lying there since last one month and slowly disappearing in the drains again.
‘The work of garbage lifting from dhalao (dumping site) is with South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) while Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Corporation (DSIIDC) looks after construction waste as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan,’ said Amit Yadav, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of DSIIDC, the government body responsible for sanitation and management of the area.Â
Even the vicinity of government offices are not cleaned. The silt is accumulated right outside the office of Delhi Jal Board. Surprisingly, the employees of DJB even after noticing the silt, did not bother to report it to concerned authorities.
Shockingly, the officers of SDMC are not even aware about its own dumping site in Okhla phase III. ‘Okhla Industrial Area Phase-III is managed by DSIIDC. I am not aware about any dhalao there,’ said Rupesh Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of south zone of SDMC. But when informed about the statement of DSIIDC officer he said, ‘If he is saying I will look into the matter and ensure removal of the garbage.’Â
‘The process of removing silt from the clogged drains was started in August and completed on 2 October,’ said PK Jain, assistant engineer posted in DSIIDC site office in the area.
It is important to note here that all the sanitation workers in the area are daily wagers of a private concessionaire. The workers are not even paid minimum wages as prescribed by Delhi government.
‘We are paid only Rs 200 per day,’ said a sanitation worker. The minimum wages for non-skilled workers in Delhi is Rs 279 to Rs 311 per day.
