Arun Jaitley to quell protests in Delhi BJP

While Jaitley managed to woo back one of the party’s prominent faces and former mayor of South Delhi Savita Gupta to the party, North Delhi mayor Azad Singh, former minister HS Balli and Poonam Azad along with several others refused to fall in line.

Millennium Post was the first to report that Jaitley has been given the responsibility to handle the crisis as Delhi BJP in-charge Nitin Gadkari on Friday called on Jaitley to say that the situation had gone out of his control. Jaitley, who generally holds meetings at the party’s national office at 11, Ashoka Road, reached the state BJP office at 14, Pandit Pant Mart on Saturday evening and individually met anguished ticket seekers and protesters in separate groups.

Meanwhile, Poonam Azad, wife of former cricketer turned politician and Lok Sabha MP Kirti Azad, held a meeting of her supporters at her husband’s bungalow, sources said. ‘We will soon take a decision in the interest of poorvanchal voters in the city,’ Poonam Azad told Millennium Post adding she is open to contest as an independent or on any other party’s ticket.

‘Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders approached me but I didn’t go to them. I am a devoted worker of the BJP and the RSS. I will always be with my party,’ said Savita Gupta. Azad Singh has called a mahpanchayat in Mundka on Sunday to decide his future course of action. Four-time MLA HS Balli has declared he would contest either independently from Hari Nagar or on a ticket from any other political party, preferably the Congress. However, Congress has not responded so far.

‘I spoke to Savita Gupta in the morning. She had reacted adversely after being denied a ticket,’ said Jaitley. ‘The party can’t fulfill the aspiration of every ticket seeker. These are collective decisions and every party worker will gradually abide by them,’ added Jaitley. He also met over a dozen ticket seekers including BB Tyagi from Laxmi Nagar, Rekha Gupta from Tri Nagar and Satish Upadhaya from Malviya Nagar. At the party office, he had to face protesters from Shakur Basti and Ambedkar Nagar. Jaitley downplayed the allegation of money exchanging hands during ticket distribution.
