In its first list of candidates for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday came up with the list of 22 candidates, fielding only four out of seven ministers of the Arvind Kejriwal government, including former law minister Somnath Bharti.
The party, however, kept people guessing on the candidature of Kejriwal from New Delhi besides the names of Manish Sisodia, Rakhi Birla and prominent faces of AAP that are missing in the first list of 22. The party has fielded 12 sitting MLAs besides giving a second chance to 10 more candidates. The first list features Jarnail Singh who will contest from Tilak Nagar, Somnath Bharti who will contest from Malviya Nagar and Saurabh Bharadwaj has been fielded from Greater Kailash. Also featuring in the first list are former NSG commando Surender Singh contesting from Delhi Cantt, Girish Soni from Madipur and Vishesh Ravi from Karol Bagh.
Meanwhile, the party added that the selection process of the candidates is similar to the last year assembly elections. Candidates have been selected by the political affairs committee based on the recommendations of the Delhi election campaign committee. However, senior leader Sanjay Singh said that the list could see last minute changes if any candidate is found involved in any criminal case or corruption charges are levied against him/her which are found true.
The AAP has constituted a three-member team headed by Anand Kumar along with Ashish Khetan and Rishikesh Kumar as members to look into any such complaints.
‘We want to release all the candidates’ names as soon as possible because they will get more time to conduct door-to-door campaigns eventually,’ Singh added.
Meanwhile, party tickets have been given to two Sikhs, Jagdeep Singh from Harinagar and Jarnail Singh from Tilak Nagar along with two women candidates, Bandana Kumari from Shalimar Bagh and Bhavna Gaur from Palam respectively, in the first list.
