AAP blames Cong, BJP for hike in power bill

‘AAP is shocked over the central government’s decision to ignore the proposal of the Kejriwal government to continue with 50 per cent subsidy for the next six months, till September 2014,’ said Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi chief minister in a press conference. ‘AAP strongly condemns the discontinuation of the existing relief provided to the electricity consumers by the government in their monthly bills in Delhi from 1 April,’ he added. He claimed in the interim budget AAP had clearly made a provision for this relief to continue and the power department was ready with its proposal. ‘The UPA government’s decision to reverse this pro-people measure is a betrayal of the people of Delhi.

The BJP is an equal partner in this anti-people decision as they did not oppose the bill in parliament despite having promised 30 per cent reduction in the electricity bills in its manifesto for the Delhi assembly elections,’ blamed Kejriwal.

Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan, however, blamed Kejriwal for this fiasco. ‘The falsehood of Kejriwal is being exposed. After coming to power at the centre and Delhi, BJP will make the rates of essential services and commodities reasonable,’ said Vardhan. ‘AAP misled the people of Delhi. This party treated people as vote bank and made populist announcements,’ he added.

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said, ‘I challenge him to make the minutes of the meetings of his cabinet or Delhi assembly public. He had announced the subsidy is till March.’

In it’s last session, Delhi assembly had approved the government’s decision to provide Rs 373 crore power subsidy to fulfill it’s promise to halve the electricity bills of consumers up to 400 units. But this could be sustained only till March. Kejriwal had announced after the audit of power companies by the CAG is completed, his government will take the final decision on continuance of the subsidy but he resigned in just 49 days. The decision of subsidy by AAP government had benefitted 28 lakh out of 34.6 lakh power consumers in the city. Another proposal of AAP government to waive off electricity bills of over 24,000 power consumers who had defaulted in the payment of electricity bills in order to support AAP’s movement is pending in Delhi High Court.
