Out of one lakh fifty thousand students who were shortlisted after appearing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, only 1,28,000 students took the JEE Advance examination on 2 June to compete for about 10,000 coveted seats at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).
Experts said, ‘The basic difference between previous years and the current year is that in previous years, the entry to IITs was based on the performance in IIT-JEE examination papers subject to obtaining a minimum of 60 per cent qualifying marks in class XII Board examination, whereas this year, the performance in JEE Advance can fetch a seat only if one qualifies to be in top twenty percentile of respective XII Board examination’.
R L Trikha, an expert said, ‘The pattern of JEE Advanced for both papers 1 and 2 will be of three hours duration and will remain objective type.Â
However in previous years, a few types such as the numerical-based and multiple-choice questions type, did not carry negative marks. All the rest carried negative marks.’Â
This year onwards in Paper 1, there is a drastic change in the marking pattern. Paper-1 is of 180 Marks (60 questions).
‘In each subject, 10 questions will be of the kind of multiple-choice questions (MCQ)- single correct with no negative marking with each question of 2 marks only. Five questions will be MCQ-multicorrect with negative marking (-1 for wrong
answer).
The other 5 questions will be numerical-based with single digit as answer (0 to 9)with negative marking (-1 for wrong answer). Each question of the later two types carry 4 marks for the right answer. Both Chemistry and  Physics questions papers were balanced, though a few questions in Chemistry are tough. Mathematics was tougher than Physics and Chemistry,’ Trikha added.
Sources on the condition of anonymity said that the number of students appearing in JEE Advance did not match the number that cracked the JEE Main. Some students who cleared JEE Main did not appear for the JEE Advance on 2 June.Â
