Update: 2014-11-11 00:36 GMT
The survivors of the tragedy who began their indefinite fast in Delhi on Monday say that since Modi government enjoys majority now, the PM can easily and quickly increase the compensation for victims if he wants.

‘Since Modi is in power now and talks about good days for our country, we hope that he can also bring good days for us. We don’t want the new government to do the same mistake which previous government made by not giving the compensation money to everyone,’ says Balkrishna Namedo, president of Bhopal gas peedit Nirashrit Pensionbhogi Sangharsh Morcha.

The Union Carbide disaster which took place on the intervening night of 2-3Dec, 1984 killed around 3,000 people instantly, and many more over the years. It left victims injured and maimed, with many suffering from lung cancer, kidney and liver failure, physical and mental deformity,
‘The government’s apex research agency, the India Council of Medical Research reported that over 12000 people died due to the disaster till 1993.

But when it came to seeking compensation from the American corporations the government said that number of dead was only 5295,’ says Nawab Khan, president of the Bhopal gas Peedit Mahila purush Sangharsh Morcha. Five women survivors along with others who have suffered because of the disastrous incident, demand that compensation should be increased.

‘In 2010, a group of ministers decided to pay additional compensation of Rs1 lakh but left as many as 93 percent survivors without any specific or legal reason. We are calling upon this (NDA) government to correct that and pay Rs1 lakh to all those affected,’ Rashida Bee, president of Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karamchari Sangh, said.
