Kolkata: The West Bengal government is sending a letter to the state election commission containing all information regarding security arrangement for panchayat elections, here on Wednesday. The letter it was learnt is going to ask for Central forces for conducting the panchayat polls, a deviation from its earlier stand.

‘We are sending a letter to the SEC today giving details regarding security arrangement for the three-phased panchayat election in the state on 2, 6 and 9, July’ state home secretary Basudeb Banerjee said here on Wednesday.

However, Millennium Post has learnt that the state government has proposed requesting the Central government to provide it with 500 companies of Central forces for conducting the panchayat polls. The state panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee, however, dodged the issue. ‘I know that a decision has been taken. However, the letter is the home department’s subject’ Mukherjee told Millennium Post.

Banerjee, while declining to divulge details of the letter, said, ‘it is written to the SEC in compliance to its query’. He said that the state government had written to the governments of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa asking for state armed force for election duty here. The SEC and the Trinamool Congress government had a major disagreement over deployment of security forces during polling and the timing of the election.
