Uncommon pride

Fortunately, the medal tally and some metallic excellence displayed by Indian sporting participants at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games have left their fellow citizens a tad happier this time. With the total medal tally now at 19 and having pocketed five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals in various sporting events, India secures fifth position at the Games, with considerable chances of breaking into the top three. The best performances have been definitely in shooting and weightlifting, while in archery India has shown formidable display of gamesmanship.

Abhinav Bindra has struck gold in shooting among male contenders, while Apurvi Chandela and Rahi Sarnobat clinched a gold medal each, thereby turning India into a shooting powerhouse in the international arena. With medals in judo, weightlifting, archery, and inspiring stints in hockey, squash league matches, India has scaled up its fortunes in the 20th CWG. Given that the union government has showered not a small blessing on our national sporting stars, with a new sporting university, scholarships, new academies, earmarking funds for training aspiring sportsmen and women, developing and upgrading stadia, it seems that the future of our sporting stars has been granted a huge facelift. Naturally, a stellar innings at the Games would only brighten the already shining prospect of sports culture in India.
