LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
A father is a child’s first mentor, guide and inspiration. The world of sporting has been no different with several sons emerging from their father’s shadows to blow the mind of world audiences;
One of the biggest stories to break ahead of the 2019 season was the news that Ferrari had snapped up young Mick Schumacher for their young driver programme. Why is this significant? Well, if you consider the fact that his father Michael won five of his record seven World Championships at the Scuderia, it's easy to understand the excitement. For now, Mick will focus on F2 with Prema Racing, though surely the 19-year-old is inching close to the bright lights of F1 already.
But of course, this is not the only father-son duo to shake the sporting world – let's take a look at some iconic names from the past, present and potential future.
Michael and Robert Dunlop (Motorcycle Racing)
The Dunlop name is iconic in motorcycle racing, and not just because of its tyres. Joey and Robert Dunlop were two brothers who came up through the road racing world to make a name for themselves on the international stage. The late Robert Dunlop is a legend of TT, a race where he won or podiumed 14 times in his career. Now, his son Michael is himself becoming a TT legend — Michael set the record for the fastest lap ever recorded at the Isle of Man, the world's premier TT race, going an average of 130 mph over the course of the 17-mile lap.
Vece and Leander Paes (Hockey &Tennis)
Dr Vece Paes was a part of 1972 Olympics hockey team that won the bronze medal. Twenty-four years later, his son Leander bagged an Olympic bronze in Tennis. This is the only father-son pair in India to have won Olympic medals for the country. Leander's mother Jennifer captained the Indian volleyball team at the 1980 Asian basketball championship. Sport indeed runs in the Paes family!
Joe and Marvis Frazier (Boxing)
Everybody knows how good former WBA and WBC Heavyweight Champ 'Smokin' Joe Frazier was due to his trilogy against Muhammad Ali. Joe went 32-4-1 with 27 Kos between 1965 and 1981 with Ali and George Foreman the only two men to beat him. Joe took on all the top heavyweights of the era such as Jerry Quarry, Jimmy Ellis, Joe Bugner, Oscar Bonavena, George Chuvalo and Buster Mathis. He was truly an all-time great due to his bobbing and weaving style and tremendous left hook. However, his son Marvis was actually underrated. True, he was blown out in the first round by Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson, but Marvis went 19-2 with 8 Kos from 1980 to 1988 before hanging his gloves. He wasn't a heavy hitter, but had some good wins over solid contenders such as James 'Bonecrusher' Smith, James 'Quick' Tillis, Jose Ribalta, Joe Bugner, Bernard Benton, James Broad and Philipp Brown.
Cha Bum-Kun and Cha Du-Ri (Football)
Cha Bum-Kun is often considered the greatest Asian player of all time and was also awarded the title Asia's Player of the Century by International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). He starred in the German Bundesliga first for Frankfurt and then at Bayer Leverkusen. The attacker played over 100 games for Korean Republic including the 1986 world cup. The South Korean legend has also had a successful managerial career and is currently in-charge of Suwon Bluewings. His son Cha Du-Ri was born in Germany while father Bum-Kun was playing for Frankfurt. He is the first Korean player who was born outside Korea to have played in a FIFA World Cup.
Bob and David Duval (Golf)
David, the former No 1, is the famous face of the clan, but Bob is no slouch. A former club professional, Bob joined the Senior PGA Tour and won the 1999 Emerald Coast Classic the same day David captured the Players Championship.
Mychal and Klay Thompson (Basketball)
Mychal and Klay are very different in terms of the type of players they are. Mychal was a defensive-minded big man, and Klay is one of the best sharpshooters the NBA has ever seen. What is interesting though is that they both have ended up playing for their respective generation's "showtime" team. First with Mychal playing for the original Showtime Lakers of the '80's, and now with Klay on the high-powered Warriors. Both teams are fast-paced, entertaining, offensive juggernauts that are difficult for any team to handle. Following the Warriors historic playoff run this year, Mychal and Klay are now only the second father-son duo to have each won two NBA championships.
