Snubbed by top brass, Goel says he would abide by BJP’s choice

He also said that he had never threatened to resign if anybody else is nominated as party’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi.

‘I am not staking claim for any post. The parliamentary board is the final authority to decide on the issue,’ said Goel in a press conference when he was asked whether he is in the race for the post of chief ministerial candidate of the party in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. He also denied the reports that he had ever threatened to resign in dissent if any other leader is nominated as the party’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi.

His statement is being seen as an indication of reconciling to the fact that former Delhi BJP president Harshvardhan, for all practical purposes, has been chosen to lead the party in Delhi assembly polls. As leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, returned to Delhi from his foreign trip on Monday, the central parliamentary board is likely to meet on the issue in the next few days. A majority of the 11 member parliamentary board, Narendra Modi, Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani, Nitin Gadkari, M M Joshi, M Venkaiah Naidu, and Arun Jaitley are in favour of Harshvardhan said sources. The party leaders feel that Harshvardhan can win back the votes being weaned away by Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Admi Party (AAP).

Contrary to his mellowed stand on Monday, Goel last Friday had flaunted the results of pre-poll surveys by various agencies giving enough indication for his chief ministerial aspirations saying, ‘Everybody knows the name of chief ministerial candidate of BJP, he is a clear leader in all the pre-poll surveys. The central parliamentary board will finalise the name of the chief ministerial candidate based on the choice of party workers.’
