Coming are the days when power consumers in the city will pay electricity bills like STD call rates - costly during peak hours but cheaper in the non-peak hours. Delhi government is working on “differential power tariff” on the basis of <g data-gr-id="23">real time</g> power load in Delhi.

“On implementation of the scheme, the consumers will be charged like their call rates. It will encourage power saving as consumers will be aware about high electricity rates in the peak hours,” said Adarsh Shastri, Parliamentary Secretary (Information Technology) of Delhi government. As per the plan, the electricity meters will be equipped to calculate differential charges and also show the real time rate of electricity. “Nowadays, people use air-conditioners more in the afternoon and early evening hours which create <g data-gr-id="36">huge</g> load on transformers, forcing power cuts. With differential power rates, consumers will be aware about the high costs of power and can switch off some of their appliances as and when required,” added Shastri. He further added that it would result in some uniform load on power infrastructure.

In its endeavours to use IT in <g data-gr-id="43">electricity</g> sector, the government is also planning Ambient Lighting in the city to save power. “In Ambient Lighting system, the intensity of the street lamps increases with increase in darkness and they automatically switch off <g data-gr-id="31">in sufficient</g> sunlight. We will install LED lights on street <g data-gr-id="32">lamposts</g> and will also use Smart Lighting technology. It will save 30 <g data-gr-id="33">per cent</g> power,” informed Shastri.

Shastri’s team is also drafting a proposal for Grid Metering, in which the solar power generated by the citizens on their <g data-gr-id="34">roof tops</g> will automatically be transferred to the grid on real time basis. “The cost of the solar power sold by the consumers will be automatically deducted from their electricity bills and he will get a balanced electricity bill to pay,” added Shastri. The government is also reviving the Multi Modal Transport System floated by Delhi government before Commonwealth Games. “It’s a noble idea but could not be implemented due to lack of political will,” said Shastri. In the project, a single smart card will be made <g data-gr-id="38">sufficient</g> communication by Delhi Metro, buses, autos, parking, etc.
