The filing of nomination papers for all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi closed on Saturday. On the last day of nominations, famous Bhojpuri singer-cum-actor, Manoj Tiwari filed his papers as BJP candidate from North East Delhi. Tiwari will challenge Anand Kumar of Aam Admi Party in a triangular contest with Congress’s old warhorse JP Aggarwal.
Besides, Tiwari BJP and Congress candidates from South Delhi parliamentary seat Ramesh Bidhuri and Ramesh Kumar also filed their papers.
Congress candidate from North West Delhi and Union minister Krishna Tirath also opted last day to file her nomination paper.
As per the records with election commission a total of 177 candidates have filed nominations for seven Lok Sabha seats in the city.
Tiwari, who is eyeing Poorvanchali votes to secure his victory in the Lok Sabha election, has assets worth over Rs 19 crore. The Bhojiwood actor-turned-politician possesses eight houses – three in Mumbai, two each in Delhi and Varanasi and one in Thane along with two agricultural and non-agricultural lands.
He has five cars which include Audi Q7, Innova, Mercedes Benz, Honda City and a Toyota Fortuner totally worth Rs 91.4 lakh. Tiwari has shown 85.5 lakh as income in his last year’s income tax return. His movable assets, which include 130 gm gold and 4.5 lakh cash in hand along with insurance policies and deposits, is worth approximately Rs 6.9 crore.
His immovable property which includes agricultural, non agricultural lands and eight houses is worth of approximately Rs 12.9 crore. Tiwari has a liability of Rs 3.4 crore. He has no cases pending against him. Sahab Singh Chauhan also filed his nomination as covering candidate for Tiwari. He has declared over Rs 79.3 lakh as his movable assets and Rs 4.1 crore which also includes the assets of his wife and children.
The maximum 36 candidates have filed nomination from North East parliamentary seat followed by 34 candidates on Chandni Chowk but a minimum 17 candidates are in fray from North West Lok Sabha seat which is reserved for SC category. ‘The number of candidates will come down in the final list of candidates as some covering and dummy candidates are expected to withdraw their nomination,’ said spokesperson of Delhi unit of election commission.
The commission will conduct scrutiny of these nominations on Monday and candidates can withdraw their nominations till 26 March. The commission will release a final list of contestants on 26 March.
Sitting Congress MP from South Delhi constituency, Ramesh Kumar’s assets have increased over seven times in the last five years from Rs 2.5 crore to Rs 17 crores. He declared immovable assets, including the properties of his wife, worth Rs 7.5 crore.
Kumar and his wife together have declared movable assets worth approximately Rs 9.6 crore which includes 800 gm gold ornaments, currently valued at Rs 19.2 lakh.
The sitting MP has shown Rs 7.09 lakh as income in his last year’s income tax return while his wife has declared Rs 26,693 as income for the last financial year.
Delhi Police on toes to ensure free, fair polls
New Delhi: Delhi Police is on an overdrive these days as it prepares for a peaceful Lok Sabha polls which are slated for 10 April.
Senior police officials are regularly holding meetings to assess the security needs ahead of elections.
A coordination meeting with police chiefs of neighbouring states is slated to be held in the next couple of days at the Delhi Police Headquarters.
Specialised units like Special Cell and Crime Branch have also been roped in for threat assessment.
Senior police officials are leaving no stone unturned as the Delhi Police has to carry out double responsibility – first to ensure that the election code is not violated and second to oversee fool-proof security when the election takes place.
