Update: 2012-05-25 08:07 GMT
A member of 'Mewati Gang' who had murdered an on duty Delhi police constable in Bharat Nagar was arrested by Delhi police. The accused was identified as Sukha, 30.

On the intervening night of 16 and 17 May, Mewati Gang had hit a patrolling motorcycle that killed Naresh, a constable and had injured a Delhi police home guard. Naresh was on duty at Bharat Nagar when he was informed that the members of Mewati gang were coming his way. To catch them, Naresh had, along with the home guard, chased them on a bike. But when Naresh tried to halt the tempo carrying of the Mewati gang, he was run over by the tempo, killing him.

'Since last week, to prevent the attacks in south District, heavy patrolling was carried out from 12 to 2 am. The police was tipped off about the presence of some Mewati gang members who were in south district to pick cows. Based on that, a trap was laid by the cops,' said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District.

Chhaya added that on Thursday, at around 1 am, a tempo was coming from Outer Ring road was was asked to stop. As the tempo stopped, the passengers jumped off the tempo and escaped. But the driver was apprehended. A loaded country-made pistol with four live cartridges were recovered from the tempo, a Tata 407, that was, incidentally, used in the crime.

During the interrogation, it was revealed that he was a driver by profession. He came in contact with Shakir, a beef supplier, and was lured into his gang. On the intervening night of last Thursday and Friday, they had apparently attacked a man outside the community hall from where the Mewati gang were stealing cows. During the fight, a mobile phone of one of the members of the gang was dropped.

The culprits visited the spot again to retrieve the phone and in the process injured two more people. The incident and details of the vehicle were reported through the Control Room of north west district with the instructions to intercept the vehicle along with culprits as and when noticed in the area of any police station. On listening to the transmission, beat constable Naresh Kumar Verma had chased the tempo.
