Without naming Kejriwal or his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate cautioned the people against voting for the ‘newcomers’. ‘Many years, after the JP movement, Anna Hazare blew the bugle against corruption. We were hopeful that people would get rid of corruption.
‘But, some people backstabbed such a sacred movement of Anna Hazare for their own personal political aspirations and the whole agitation came to an end,’ Modi said at a well-attended BJP poll rally in Seemapuri, a Congress bastion. The Gujarat chief minister said Congress displays one hand (its symbol) but loots with both hands while for the newcomers it seems even two hands are not enough.
‘They are all for sweeping everything with the broom (AAP’s election symbol),’ Modi said. BJP had been terming AAP and its leaders Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai and others as Congress’ agents and said they are only a ‘vote-cutter’ party.
Modi also urged the people to vote for the BJP to stop the politics of vote bank and bring in politics of development. He focussed on local issues in the first of his three rallies in East Delhi but targeted every political rival by the evening. Besides Sheila Dikshit, Shahzada and Sonia Gandhi he also came heavily on union ministers Kapil Sibal and P Chidambaram.
‘A candidate wins elections by securing just 26 per cent votes. So driven by politics of vote bank, leaders focus on only 26 per cent voters by bringing all facilities in a particular area decided on the basis of caste, creed or region and 74 per cent voters are left out,’ he said, addressing the third rally in old Delhi’s parade ground near Red Fort which is considered a Muslim-dominated area. ‘When I ask them to stop politics of vote bank we are accused of opposing Muslims but it’s not true,’ he added. He said the reason for prosperity and development in Gujarat is unity, fraternity and goodwill among citizens.
He called Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit Shahenshah and attacked her for ditching people by not fulfilling her promises, price rise, wide spread corruption, and using dirty tricks to win votes.
‘What if you get a chief minister who lives amongst you? The fate of trans-Yamuna area that had been neglected is going to change. Don’t allow Congress to enter in this area this time,’ said Modi.
