A rally at the DDA market, Jail Road, will be organised on Saturday in this regard.
Eminent lawyer and Aam Aadmi Party leader HS Phoolka has demanded that the Narendra Modi government should make the Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to investigate 1984 anti-Sikh riots, functional.
The Kejriwal-led Delhi government had constituted SIT on 29 January, 2014, to investigate registered cases, reinvestigate closed cases and register fresh ones in 1984 Anti-Sikh riots in Delhi which followed the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi. The AAP government had also suggested names of three IPS officers from outside Delhi for the SIT but as the matter required approval of the Centre it was sent to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Kejrwial alleged that the BJP was ‘only making demands and not doing anything.’ The rally will be attended by AAP MLA from Hari nagar Jagdeep Singh, HS Phoolka, Jarnail Singh and other AAP Minorities’ wing leaders.
‘The Delhi cabinet, headed by Arvind Kejriwal had fulfilled the AAP’s election promise by approving the setting-up of a SIT to probe among other things, how half of the 587 FIRs registered after the riots were wrongly closed by the police under political pressure to save the Congress leaders who had allegedly led the mobs to kill innocent people in 1984,’ said AAP in a statement.
‘Both the Congress and BJP are equally responsible for the lack of justice for 1984 riots’ victims. The Congress has tried every possible trick to save those who perpetrated and masterminded the riots,’ said AAP spokesperson.
Earlier in the day, in a significant move, the Narendra Modi government on Thursday announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to be given to the kin of 3,325 people killed during anti-Sikh riots in the national capital in 1984.
