After the debacle of FYUP in DU, why do you think choice-based credit system will work in JMI?
It will take at least two years to implement the choice-based credit system to promote interdisciplinary studies. Seminars and workshops will held for teachers and students to make them understand the benefit of credit system.
What’s your take on common curriculum and common entrance test for central universities?
I don’t know how much is that practical. Courses vary between different universities. So, to have a common entrance test and curriculum is difficult. Some courses are specific to respective universities.
How do you plan to tackle accommodation problem in the university?
I agree that places nearby are not safe and also does not provide proper environment for student’s growth. We have applied to different agencies for hostel funds. A new hostel for women is already in the pipeline.
What are the other initiatives that university is planning for students?
We plan to share the expertise of other universities like DU and JNU to provide better exposure to students. One way of doing so is to have exchange programmes in which students can do a course of their interest in the university which specialises in that subject.
When can we expect students’ union elections in JMI?
The matter is sub-judice. As soon as it gets resolved, we will hold students’ election. I want candidates to contest election within the rules specified by Lyngdoh committee. I would love to see more female participation in students’ polls.
You are termed as ‘ambitious VC’. How do you look at that?
I have always been ambitious throughout my life. If we push ourselves, then only change comes. And for now I wish to put Jamia Millia Islamia on international map.
