The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which manages security at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, have recovered gold worth Rs 6.3 crore from its Terminal 3 in the last eight months. The CISF also recovered contraband items of worth Rs 1.58 crore between February and March 2014.
According to the data provided by the CISF, in most of the cases the gold was smuggled in the form of biscuits and bars. It recovered around 100 gold biscuits along with unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.32 crore from the passengers. The data further shows that unattended articles worth Rs 8.19 crore have been confiscated by CISF till September 2014.
The defence force has expressed concerns over new way being adopted by criminals to smuggle the yellow metal. In August this year, the security personnel were shocked when they recovered four gold biscuits weighing around 1.45 kg, hidden inside a mobile phone shell, from a washroom at the airport. The incident put the entire security system on high alert and the wash room was immediately evacuated for any explosives inside the packet.
Meanwhile, the CISF also apprehended around 20 touts during the same period for creating problems at the airport. It also apprehended 13 passenger for carrying fake tickets to travel abroad. As many as 33 ammunitions, along with the one weapon was also recovered during the same period by the CISF.
