The city's most-wanted gangster, Sandeep Gadoli, was killed in an encounter in Mumbai on Sunday morning.

The Gurgaon police learnt that Gadoli and his gang members were staying at Hotel Airport Metro in the Andheri West area of Mumbai. They contacted their counterparts in Mumbai and informed them about Gadoli's whereabouts.

The Gurgaon police along with their Mumbai counterparts rushed to the hotel where Gadoli was staying. Gadoli and his accomplices learnt about police presence in the hotel and they fired at the police.  The police retaliated and Gadoli was injured in the shootout.

According to the police, Gadoli suffered two bullet injuries. Two police officers were also injured in the cross-fire. Gadoli was brought to a government hospital in Mumbai, where he succumbed to his injuries at 11:55 pm. Two members of Gadoli's gang – Manish Khurana and Deepak – have been arrested, police said.

The city police learnt about Gadoli's location in Mumbai when one of his close aides Sonu, who was living as Dinesh Yadav, was arrested. He was one of the two boxers from Haryana, who was allegedly caught sexually harassing a model at Bandra Bandstand, while Gadoli's another ally identified as Amit managed to escape.

The city police had been trying to nab Gadoli, who was involved in around 40 criminal cases,  for over the past two decades. He was also involved in the killing of Binder Gujjar (a councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon). The police had declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest.

According to sources, Gadoli ran an extortion racket, who targeted well-known businessmen and used to bribe policemen in Gurgaon so that they turned a blind eye to their activities.

Gadoli was also involved in a number of murder cases, police said.

"A team of the Gurgaon Police crime Branch had informed us about the whereabouts of the accused, staying at a hotel in Mumbai. There was a cross-fire between the police and the gangster and Gadoli was injured. He was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries," said Vinayak Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.
