Gangster Anwar Thakur in police net, finally

Infamous gangster, Anwar Thakur, who was out on parole since 5 May and controls a 50-odd member gang from within the confines of the Tihar Jail, was arrested by Delhi Police from the Barapullah stretch in south Delhi, on Tuesday evening.

On 15 August, Anwar Thakur (41) had run away from his residence at Pandav Nagar in east Delhi, before police recovered five automatic pistols, three country-made pistols and over 100 live cartridges from his house.

Police reached his residence only after receiving a call from his wife, Monika, who had allegedly been beaten up by Anwar before he left for some ‘business’, on the wee hours of Independence Day.

Anwar was wanted again ever since 15 August, said a senior police official.

Police also said, there are high probabilities that Anwar Thakur was an associate of Firoz, alias Fauzi, who was killed in an encounter by the Delhi Police, on the wee hours of Tuesday. A special task force was formed by the south district of Delhi Police immediately to nab Thakur.

On the basis of an information that he was coming from Meerut and shall be heading towards Gurgaon for making a deal, on Tuesday, and would drive through the Barapullah stretch in a Maruti Alto car, a trap was laid. ‘At around 7:30 pm, Anwar was spotted in a white Alto and the vehicle was sieged.

And on conducting a search at the spot, Anwar was found to have possessed a .32 bore loaded pistol,’ said a senior police official. Anwar has now been booked under Section 25 of the Arms Act.

Who is Anwar Thakur?

Around 25 years ago, Anwar Thakur was jailed by the Meerut police after he committed a theft in a house. Soon after, he took his revenge and killed the owner of the house along with his two sons. By the next one to two years, he was involved in 15 murder and dacoity cases in Meerut.

In 1992, he was arrested by the Delhi Police during a dacoity, soon after he had killed the police informer. After that, he was convicted for life. When he was shifted to Tihar, he built up a six-member gang within the premises, and by 2014, he was the leader of a 50-odd member gang, controlling its operations from the jail.
