In an unprecedented move, University of Delhi (DU) Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh on Tuesday rejected the recommendations of Committee of Courses (CoCs) he had assigned to restructure courses in the light of FYUP rollback. The restructured courses were to be applicable for the current academic session for the second year students who were enrolled under FYUP in 2013.
The Committee of Courses (CoCs) sent their recommendations for restructuring of courses on Monday as asked by Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh but he has rejected those recommendations, further delaying the process.
‘The recommendations should have been scrutinised by the Faculties and then by the Academic Council. Instead they have been summarily rejected in cases where departments had not stuck to the FYUP Discipline Courses 1 and Discipline Courses 2 papers, but had included papers of the 3-year undergraduate syllabus,’ said Nandita Narain, president, Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).
‘Some departments such as History, Women Studies, English included papers from three year undergraduate programme. However, the VC did not accept their recommendations. He demanded that only courses under FYUP should be taught.
The problem is when FYUP is scrapped, why are the courses under them being taught? Moreover, CoCs have already prepared study material in consideration with three year undergraduate programme. What’s the use of preparing again study material, that too according to FYUP courses for only one batch? It demotivates teachers also. There is total chaos right now,’ said Amitava Chakraborty, Professor, Department of Modern Indian Languages, Delhi University.
CoCs decide the courses to be taught, and then it is passed by the Academic Council. Now, CoCs have to meet again and restructure the courses.
‘From the last month, the VC is doing whatever he likes. Already the process is delayed and now VC is creating more roadblocks. For what purpose? This is a total disregard for rules and regulations and democratic norms,’ said Shaswati Mazumdar, Professor, Department of Germanic and Roman Studies, DU.
