Finally, LNJP gets equipment to treat Ebola

‘We have received an e-mail on Thursday evening from the health ministry that we can collect protection kits required for Ebola. We will collect it on Friday,’ said Siddarth Ramji, medical superintendent, LNJP hospital.

It came to light that the LNJP hospital which was designated for treatment of Ebola patients last month was not provided with personal protective equipment like gloves, fluid-resistant gowns and special goggles.

‘We are still not sure whether we are ready to fight Ebola. The isolation ward which is mandatory condition is in a poor condition. We have been working with Public Works Department (PWD) to get better wards and facilities. We are also working with engineering staff to get a proper structure for the ward. But still, it appears it will take some time as it is an infrastructural problem,’ said an official at LNJP hospital.

On Tuesday, a 26-year-old man who had been cured of Ebola in Liberia continued to show traces of
the virus in his semen upon his arrival in India and had been isolated for 90 days for preventive measures.

Till now, there has been no medicine or vaccination to treat the deadly Ebola.  Health experts suggest that preventive measures are the best way to ensure the virus doesn’t spread.

‘Even if the person is symptomatically cured, if body fluids show any traces of virus, then it means the person needs to be kept in isolation for 90 days. All body secretions either from urine, saliva or semen can be dangerous if the person is still infected with the virus. Utmost care should be taken so that nobody touches the secretions of the virus affected person,’ said SP Byotra, head of department of medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
