Eye on polls, North MCD to pump money in unauthorised colonies

In the run up to the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, North MCD has focussed on the development of unauthorised colonies in its area in finalising budget for the next financial year 2015-16. The civic body is also planning to install solar panels on all its major offices Public Private Partnership (PPP) model to minimise electricity consumption.

The standing committee on Tuesday approved Rs 75 lakh for each of the 42 unauthorised regularised colonies in its area and made a strong pitch for Rs 500 crore for development of sanitation related infrastructure in unauthorised colonies. “Union Minister for Urban Development has assured us that Rs 450 crore for development of sanitation infrastructure like drainage system, toilet blocks, bathrooms and garbage bins etc,” said Mohan Prasad Bhardwaj, chairman of standing committee in North MCD.

North MCD has 450 unauthorised colonies and an amount of Rs 119 crore has been approved by the standing committee for development works in the these colonies besides one lakh rupees for each colony to be invested to improve sanitation. The committee made several amendments while finalising the budget proposals of the municipal commissioner P K Gupta. “We have rejected all the proposals regarding new taxes and tax hikes as it would be a burden on honest taxpayers but would focus on to bring more people under tax net,” added Bhardwaj.

“Solar energy panels will be installed on major offices of MCD, identified schools and hospitals to ensure maximum utilisation of solar power. A detailed plan will soon be presented in the house,” said Bhardwaj.

Besides, water conservation and bringing all the properties under tax net would be priority of the corporation. It will soon launch a project to give “unique identification code” to each property in its area and a passbook to the owner to ensure they give property taxes regularly.
