According to environmentalists, the electric diyas and other such products are non-recyclable items and also, add burden on consumption of electricity.

‘The material used in making electric diyas and other such items is recycled plastic which means it can’t be recycled again. Even if it is recycled , it won’t be of any use. So, either it will be burnt or dumped causing harm to our environment,’ said Vikrant Tongad, an environmentalist.

He further said that electric diyas contribute to e-waste, which is very harmful to the environment. The rules for disposal of e-waste were made in 2011 but till now there is no provision for same.
‘Moreover, when we are already facing severe power crisis, we shouldn’t burden it anymore’ said
Vikrant.

Electric diyas, which are getting popular these days are made of plastic body and Chinese lights. The cost of 20 electric diyas is Rs 40 and 20 electric candle cost Rs 50. ‘People prefer to buy because they are hassle-free and cheap. But they don’t last for long. Electric diya can not be used for longer period,’ said a shopkeeper at Bhagirath Palace Market in Old Delhi.

Another environmentalist Akash said that people should not use festival as an excuse to pollute environment.

‘Festival can never be an excuse to pollute the environment. Mud diyas should be used because they are environment friendly and they don’t need any specific recycling mechanism. They are also part of our culture.’
