University of Delhi (DU) students and others can heave a sigh of relief, as e-rickshaws have been allowed to operate for next 10-15 days without any restrictions.

‘After the rally on 17 June, Nitin Gadkari has said that e-rickshaws can operate without any restrictions. Neither traffic police nor MCD can challan us. We will operate freely in campus,’ said Rajan Mishra, a e- rickshaw driver in North Campus, DU.

According to a commuter, travelling in auto rickshaw is expensive. A short trip from vishvidalaya metro station to kamala market can cost around Rs 40 whereas by travelling in e-rickshaw, it only costs Rs 10.  Having e-rickshaws back again in campus, has surely made commuters happy. Though auto rickshaws and rickshaws are other mode of transport used by students and other commuters, e –rickshaw are more popular.

Earlier, e –rickshaws were considered as illegal and various e-rickshaws drivers had to pay challan. ‘I had to Rs 4100 as challen few days back. I didn’t break any rule but traffic policemen said that it was illegal to drive e rickshaw. But I am relieved for now,’ said Kailash, an e rickshaw driver in North Campus, DU.
