Despite being politicians, only two AAP candidates state it in affidavit
In the fight for seven Lok Sabha seats in the city, 86 candidates have filed their nominations so far, but most of them have shied away from identifying themselves as politicians. The exceptions to that rule are Ashish Khetan from New Delhi and Ashutosh from Chandni Chowk parliamentary seat.
The senior most politician in the fray, J P Agarwal, who entered parliament in 1984, has mentioned his profession as social worker. Agarwal is seeking a second term from North East Delhi against Anand Kumar of the Aam Admi Party.
In the neighbouring East Delhi Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit, who is national spokesperson for his party and a two-time MP from East Delhi, has identified himself as social researcher and dairy farmer in his affidavit filed on Friday.
BJP candidate from East Delhi Mahesh Giri has identified himself as businessman but has not mentioned what type of business he is associated with. He has declared total movable assets worth approximately Rs 52 lakhs but claims not to possess any immovable assets. A member of Art of Living, Giri has only completed his matriculation. AAP’s Raj Mohan Gandhi has stated author as his profession.
In the most high profile constituency in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, Chandni Chowk, sitting MP Kapil Sibal has mentioned union minister as his occupation, while BJP’s Harsh Vardhan has identified himself as practising doctor and MLA.
Congress general secretary Ajay Maken, who started his political career as DUSU president in 1984, has identified himself as a businessman. BJP national spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi, who is contesting from New Delhi, is an advocate. For the West Delhi seat, BJP candidate Parvesh Verma and Congress’s Mahabla Mishra are businessmen, while APP’s Jarnail Sigh is a writer.
