According to well-placed sources, party veteran and outgoing leader of opposition in Delhi assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, took a stringent stand on the demand to replace a few sitting MLAs.
‘His stand was inspired by the demand to give ticket to his son Ajay Malhotra from Greater Kailash seat,’ said a senior leader of the party. ‘Malhotra could revise the stand from “repeat” to “replace” only if his son replaces him,’ he added, pointing to the octogenarian’s leaders antics.
Sources said that party also could not reach a consensus on how many seats are to be offered to its powerful ally from Punjab, Shiromani Akali Dal, which has asked for 15 tickets. Sources said that BJP at best was in mood to concede two seats to SAD – Tilak Nagar and Shahdara.
According to sources, the party could repeat most of the sitting MLAs if it decided not to field Ajay Malhotra. According to sources, the surveys carried out by former BJP president and incharge for Delhi Nitin Gadkari, included performance of five MLAs – Dharmdeo Solanki (Palam), Satya Prakash Rana (Bijwasan), Pardhuman Rajput (Dwarka), Anil Jha (Burari) and Shri Krishna (Burari)
The hours-long meeting at BJP’s national office on Tuesday evening ended up with decision to meet again on Wednesday morning to finalise the matter.
On Monday responding to questions on whether there was infighting between ticket hopefuls, Delhi chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan said he was part of a very ‘amicable’ and ‘open and healthy’ discussion at Gadkari’s house that lasted close to nine hours last Thursday.
‘All leaders are working together to ensure the victory of the party. There is neither any turbulence now nor any trouble in the past,’ said Dr. Vardhan, adding that he has had a cordial relationship with Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel for many years.
Among the prominent constituencies from which senior party leaders are hoping to contest are Greater Kailash (GK), Rohini, Malviya Nagar, Vishwas Nagar, Patparganj and Tri-Nagar.
