The Capital has claimed its nth victim, a young woman once again, who was stabbed to death in the city’s busy Karol Bagh area. With racism and sexism becoming ever more rampant in the national capital, what hope does anyone have any more? What happened to the swelling rage that gripped Delhi in the wake of Nirbhaya gang-rape and the protest marches that followed the death of Nido Tania? Why our spruced up Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013 fail to protect women and others from the cultural margins – whether in terms of sex, religion, language, caste or skin colour – almost a year after it was legislated? Why gender sensitisation programmes fall flat when it comes to practicing what we preach? It’s extremely regrettable that our national capital is unsafe for almost everyone out on the streets, and the 26-year-old MNC worker who was murdered on Friday evening in Karol Bagh, in this light, shares more this 19-year-old Nido Tania, who was beaten to death in bustling Lajpat Nagar market. We must ask if women and teenagers cannot be saved in busy areas on the city, how would their safety be ensured in the secluded regions of our sprawling Capital? Why should we live in constant fear of being assaulted, mugged or murdered in one of the most cosmopolitan cities of this country? It’s time the buck stops with Delhi police, which now has yet another stain in its record, and ultimately us, the denizens of Delhi.
