A case against 20 seniors has been registered in the nearest police station on Wednesday.
Puneet Kumar, first year student of BA Programme , Satyawati College (evening) claimed that he was beaten up by a group of students on college premises.
‘Along with Puneet, his friend Ravi, who is not a student of the college was ragged and beaten up,’ said sources.
‘I was leaving after the orientation programme at around 3.30 pm, when a group of 20-22 seniors took me to a classroom. They first slapped me and then hit me with sticks on my head,’ said Puneet Kumar.
A senior who witnessed the incident said that the student was ragged and was brutally beaten up.
‘I was discussing college history with freshers when I heard noises from the first floor. I rushed to the spot and saw that a big group of students were beating up two students. I tried to intervene but they overpowered me.
They took the victim inside the bathroom and hit his head in the basin and used broomsticks to assault him. When they saw that his head was severly injured, they all ran away. I called the police immediately. The van came after 10 minutes but nobody came inside the college.
By that time the victim was badly injured. He suffered head injuries and was taken to Sunder Lal Jain hospital. The police have registered our complaint then but refused to register an FIR. Then after a lot of deliberations, the police have finally registered an FIR,’ said IndraMani, second year student , Satyawati College (evening).
Despite several attempts, college principal Satender Kumar Joshi was not available for comments.
Though the student and the witness alleged that it is a case of ragging, the police have denied such charges. ‘It is a case of physical assault amongst college students and not ragging. An FIR has been registered under section 323 and 348 of IPC’, said a police official.
On 18 July, Delhi University had asked all colleges to strictly enforce rules and regulations to prevent ragging and also set up anti-ragging disciplinary committees to keep strict vigil.
