Cop’s death in Meerut more than road rage?

Update: 2012-05-18 03:05 GMT
The Delhi police said the incident of shooting head constable Sanjeev Kumar by unidentified persons on 15 May in Meerut was a case of road rage. But Jawahar Lal Tripathi, IG, Meerut, has pointed out a few glaring loopholes in this version.

It is being claimed by Delhi police that the South Delhi Special Staff team that included the deceased Sanjeev, along with two other constables, Vivek and Sachin, went on a secret mission to trace a gang of auto thieves in Meerut. They were near Gang Nahar in their Wagon R when a Santro purportedly overtook them and blocked their way. This apparently resulted in an argument, following which the Santro gang opened gunfire.

'On 15 May, Kumar was shot in his chest and he died on the spot, while constable Sachin took a bullet in his knee. The other constable, Vivek, along with Sanjeev's friend Pankaj were unhurt,' said the police official.

But Tripathi wonders why the South Delhi Special Staff team, who must have carried special weapons along with them as they were on a mission, did not fight back.

According to Delhi police, only Sanjeev was carrying a weapon. 'How could they have gone after a gang of auto thieves without any weapons?' asked Tripathi.

Delhi police had claimed that there were only two rounds of gunshots — a bullet on Sanjeev's chest and the other on the knee of the other constable Sachin. But Tripathi alleged that there was an unexplained third bullet mark that damaged the rearview mirror of the Wagon R.

According to Tripathi, often, lack of coordination between Delhi Police and NCR police make it easy for criminals to slip through the police net. He said the alleged 'road rage' was a classic example of this lack of coordination. Apparently, the Meerut police was informed about the incident  only after two hours.

During investigation, Meerut police could not find any trace of blood on the road where the incident supposedly happened.

Only a 9mm cartridge was recovered, but there should have been more, as per the explanation given by the Delhi police, pointed out Tripathi.
