Cong begins overhauling UP state unit

Update: 2012-06-07 00:54 GMT
In the first signs of the overhauling of the party unit in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress high command on Wednesday removed its Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tiwari and appointed Pradeep Mathur in his place. Mathur is a four-time MLA from Mathura and is known as an old Congress loyalist.

The decision to remove Tiwari from his post on Wednesday, which he had been holding since 1989, has not surprised Congress leaders in the state. The sources in the party say that the decision to remove Tiwari is on the expected lines. It is believed that he will be accommodated in the All India Congress Committee. Sources say that the candidature of Mathur was, in fact, backed by Tiwari himself. The other candidate in the fray was the Congress MLA Anugrah Narayan Singh from Allahabad.

After the first major change in the state, where the Congress fared poorly by winning just 28 seats in the 403-member assembly, major changes are being expected. The next post to get a new occupant could be that of the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC). The current UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi has already tendered resignation from the post.
