In the 70-member house, 28 members of AAP, seven of the Congress, one of the JD(U) and an independent voted in support of the government, while 32 from the BJP were against the vote. Pro-tem speaker Chowdhary Mateen Ahmed, who belongs to the Congress, did not vote. Immediately after winning the trust vote for his six-day-old government, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal promised a new session of the assembly to look into the issue of Lokayukta on the line of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
‘Now that AAP government has won the trust vote, the real test begins. We will summon a new session of the assembly to look into the issue of Lokayukta. We will try to resolve all issues with the help of people’s support,’ said Kejriwal to waiting mediapersons.
‘Every citizen who wants to change the corrupt system is an Aam Aadmi whether he lives in a posh locality or in slums,’ said Kejriwal replying to the opposition’s remark that his leaders were crorepatis but falsely claim themselves to be Aam Aadmi (common man). Replying at the end of the four-hour-long discussion, the chief minister emphasised that his government will never allow any corrupt to go scot free. ‘We shall nail every corrupt person and proper inquiry will be conducted on each and every scam whether it belongs to the Congress-ruled Delhi government or the BJP-ruled municipal corporations. I will not spare anybody found involved in corrupt practices in my own government,’ he added.
Overcome with emotions, Kejriwal recalled the circumstances which lead to the formation of AAP and also requested all MLAs in the house to come out of their party politics and unite to serve Delhiites in the best possible way.
‘I am not seeking your votes to save my government but I am seeking your support for the cause of the people. The common man has shown the courage to change the corrupt system and its a call to all who support their cause,’ exhorted Kejriwal to MLAs. The chief minister also recalled 17 major issues raised by his party for which he felt morally responsible to run a coalition government in Delhi. During the discussion in the house, senior AAP leaders Kumar Vishwas and Sanjay Singh were present in the Lieutenant Governor’s gallery which is reserved for special guests.
Earlier in the day, his cabinet colleague, Manish Sisodia, initiated the discussion presenting the confidence motion in the house at 2.07 pm which followed address by representatives of various parties. None of MLAs of AAP other than the chief minister and Sisodia spoke in the house while Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely and Jai Kishan and JD (U) MLA Shoaib Iqbal spoke in favour of the motion. BJP’s Harsh Vardhan, Sahib Singh Chauhan, Rambir Bidhuri and Naresh Gaur opposed the confidence motion in their speeches.
