Bullet-proof vehicles the need of the hour at IGI

Update: 2014-11-28 22:46 GMT
But it has been learnt that there are no bullet-proof vehicles at the IGI Airport which can be used to evacuate people safely in case of a terror attack. Only the NSG owns one such vehicle which is to be primarily used for counter attack in the airport. They are likely to ask the airport operator to provide more such vehicles soon.

“In a recent mock drill which involved participation of all stakeholders in the airport security later discussed the matter as to how could the passengers  and other staff be evacuated to safety from the airport premises in case of any terror attack.

In the recent terror attack in Karachi airport, there ensued a fierce 13-hour gun-battle between Taliban militants and security forces leaving 29 people dead, including all the 10 gunmen who were planning a lengthy siege of the key facility.

Meanwhile, after analysing such facts, it was concluded that Delhi airport requires bullet-proof vehicles at the earliest to be used for evacuation of passengers during such incidents,” said a source.

“We don’t want to lose crucial moments that may prove vital in saving the lives of those under attack. In such cases, these bullet-proof vehicles can be used during emergency and may be converted into temporary ambulances or may be used in the evacuation of the people including injured ones to safety,” said the source.

Earlier in June, at the Karachi airport, victims had taken refuge in a cargo shed to hide from the gunfire but got trapped when the building caught fire at the height of the battle.

“The security forces were busy to eliminate the terrorists and clearing the area, while nobody was bothered to rescue these trapped men.

“We find that if similar situation happens here, there must be bulletproof vehicles which can be used for evacuation purposes,” he added.
