BJP councillors begin scramble for MLA tickets

Update: 2014-11-07 22:48 GMT
According to sources, the councillors holding important posts like mayor, chairman of standing committee and important statutory and adhoc committees are among the ticket seekers. Interestingly, this time, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay himself is a sitting councillor so his peers are hopeful of a liberal approach towards their demand of tickets.

Upadhyay presently represent Malviya Nagar ward and was also the chairman of the standing committee at the time of taking charge as Delhi BJP chief. He is most likely to contest from Malviya Nagar assembly seat against former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti who had defeated former Delhi mayor Aarti Mehra in the last Assembly elections. Besides Upadhyay, present SDMC mayor Khushi Ram Chunar may contest from Ambedkar Nagar reserve seat. The present chairman of standing committee in SDMC Subhah Arya is also a ticket hopeful from Rajouri Garden, education committee chairman Ashish Sood who is also general secretary of Delhi BJP is also ticket hopeful from Janakpuri. Besides former mayor Sarita Choudhury from Mehrauli and Savita Gupta are also trying their luck from Kasturba Nagar.

In North DMC, mayor Yogender Chandolia is pitching for a ticket from Karolbagh. Chandolia was also a serious ticket seeker last time from this seat. Besides, Rekha Gupta who was recently appointed as general secretary in Delhi BJP is also seeking party nomination. Former MCD mayor Rajni Abbhi who lost to AAP Harish Khanna from Timarpur with a narrow margin is seeking party nomination again.

Former North DMC mayor Azad Singh who courted a controversy by arm twisting the party go get ticket from Mundka but lost the election may not be considered this time on ‘one family one post’ principle.

In East Delhi standing committee, chairman B B Tyagi is considered a strong contender from Laxmi Nagar. Former mayor R N Dubey, and former chairman of standing committee Mahek Singh are also pitching for their tickets. There is, however, enough time for ticket declaration but BJP has already started the survey for ‘winnable’ candidates. The councillors who had lost elections in the last assembly polls may be dropped but new ‘winnables’ would be picked up, said a senior party leader.
