Kolkata: After a building tilted to one side in Baghajatin recently during lifting work compelling the civic body to demolish it, another building in Tangra succumbed to the same fate on Wednesday.
The multi-storey building at Tangra’s Christopher Road tilted on Wednesday morning, sparking panic among residents of the area. It is located in Ward 58 of KMC. It was learnt that the building was under-construction. Due to this, no residents were present inside when the incident took place.
Some local residents alleged the developers of the under-construction building flouted norms by failing to maintain a distance between buildings beside it.
KMC officials reached the spot soon after the incident. The police were instructed to announce to the residents of the adjacent building to evacuate their residence for safety reasons. With directions for demolition, police said the work for razing the building to ground will begin on Thursday. The residents of the adjacent building said although they were asked to evacuate their residences they have nowhere to go. Mayor Firhad Hakim is learnt to have told the media that the concerned licensed building surveyor and the engineers will be show-caused. He said in the Baghajatin incident too similar steps have been taken.
Hakim confirmed that a report concerning the Baghajatin building has been submitted with the municipal commissioner. It will be assessed by the building committee and thereafter a decision will be taken. He said there are about 30 such tilted buildings in Kolkata.
These are mostly due to faulty engineering.
The Mayor, who is also the minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs (UD & MA) department, recently said his department will issue a circular to all municipal bodies in the state laying down mandatory measures which need fulfilling for executing lifting work
of tilted buildings.
