Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have arrested two persons from a hotel in Sealdah, who allegedly duped a woman of Rs 66 lakh impersonating as TRAI and Delhi Police officials.

According to police, on November 8, a woman lodged a complaint at the Charu Market Police Station alleging that two unknown persons claiming to be the officials of TRAI and Delhi Police had called her and said that she is accused in a few criminal cases. They told the woman that she will get arrested for the cases pending against her. As the woman got frightened and continuously denied the allegations, the accused persons there offered her a settlement against money.

The woman told the cops that she was asked to pay about Rs 66 lakh in order to clear her name from the “criminal cases that are pending against her”. Out of fear, the woman agreed and transferred the money to the bank account number given by the fraudsters.

Later, the woman realised that she had been duped and lodged a complaint at the Charu Market police station. During the probe, cops checked the details of the bank account and also tracked the mobile number that was used to call the woman.

On Tuesday night, cops traced the accused duo in the Sealdah area and arrested them. The accused persons identified as Dhanji Jagannath Shinde and Vinod Kondiba Pawar are the residents of Mumbai. The money obtained from the victim was credited in a private bank account owned by Shinde. Kondiba was found to be his associate. During the raid at their hotel room, three mobile phones, one pre-activated SIM, some account details and bank documents were seized by the police.
