Kolkata: Tension spread in the Tollygunge area under jurisdiction of Regent Park Police Station on Friday morning after a severed head of a woman was spotted in a garbage vat.
Sources said, on Friday morning, residents of Graham Road area saw a severed human head wrapped in a transparent plastic packet in the garbage vat. The police were informed. Cops from Regent Park Police Station recovered the head and sent it for autopsy. Meanwhile, cops from the Homicide Section arrived at the spot along with a sniffer dog. The dog ran near 100 metres where a housing complex is located. Apart from the Homicide Section, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of South Suburban Division, Bidisha Kalita also visited the spot.
While probing, police are checking the CCTV footage in the vicinity to identify the culprit. Apart from police personnel probing, the scientific wing of the Kolkata Police has collected samples from the spot for examination.
In its preliminary probe, cops suspect that the murder of the woman, aged around 35 years, was committed within 12 hours of the recovery of the severed head. Police also questioned a few local people if they had seen anybody suspicious in the area.
Cops are yet to establish the identity of the woman. An all concerned message containing the details of the severed head and its picture has been circulated in all the police stations across the state as per the Standard Operating
Procedure (SOP).
