Kolkata: The prime accused in the murder of the percussionist inside the Katihar Express train compartment for specially abled people was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days on Thursday.
The accused Rahul Jat alias Bholu was brought to Howrah by a team of Howrah Government Railway Police (GRP) station on Wednesday evening on transit remand. Sources informed that soon the state police will appeal for his police remand for the investigation of the murder. On November 19 morning, the body of the percussionist Soumitra Chatterjee was found inside the earmarked compartment for specially-abled people. It was lying on a bunk covered in a bedsheet.
During the probe, police found that Chatterjee’s luggage and mobile phone were missing. While tracking his phone, cops found it was moving towards South India parallel to the Railway track. Checking the Railway route, cops found it is the route of Ernakulam Express which originates from Howrah Railway Station. Accordingly, the railway stations enroute were alerted by the state police. However, Rahul remained untraced.
Meanwhile, cops found that Chatterjee’s mobile phone was switched off after the location reached Salem about three days after the murder. Cops were trying to track the mobile but it remained switched off. The Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP), Howrah, Pushpa on November 26, received a phone call from the Gujarat Police where she was told that Rahul, who was also wanted in Gujarat, confessed that he killed someone in Howrah.
State police were also told by the Gujarat Police that Rahul had raped and murdered a 19-year-old girl at Valsad
district there.
He had committed several murders and other crimes. So far, state police officials learnt that Gujrat Police is considering Rahul as a serial killer who used to target the passengers of the compartment for specially-abled people. He has a partially-defective leg.
