Bejewelled tales on the ramp

With the PCJ Delhi Couture Week all set to unleash itself on the Capital’s fash frat, Millennium Post has learnt that Bollywood veteran Sharmila Tagore will be the showstopper for city-based designer duo Ashima and Leena Singh at the third edition of the fashion extravaganza that starts Wednesday. The veteran  actor, who has earlier been showstopper for the designer duo, confirmed her participation.

Their collection, titled Raag Rattan, is a bejewelled mix of tradition and the contemporary. The collection has been named by Sufi singer Zila Khan, who will also perform during the show.

‘The collection is regal, with a handcrafted bejewelled look,’ said Leena Singh of Ashima-Leena. ‘It is a handcrafted jewelled look,’ she added.

To bring out the effect, the designer duo has used fabrics like woven bracades and weaves of various kinds. ‘We have used several new techniques for a jewel-encrusted look,’ Leena added.
The collection will bring back the chakdaar jamas of the Mughal era which have been given modern touches. The designer duo will also showcase long jackets, floor-skimming skirts, lehengas and saris. The ensembles are bejewelled, in sheer and sensuous drapes which will be combined with body jewellery for a feel of royalty.

The designer duo has used fabrics in hues like diaphanous whites and creams, set off by glittering accents and beaten gold work, tourmaline, jade green and cerulean blues, deeper jewel tones like ruby, emerald and amethyst.

The embroideries bring to mind the almost lost art of precious old artisanship, the jewels of erstwhile maharajas making a scintillating style statement as embellishments.

The same has been recreated in specially created shoes which complete the look. For shoes, they have used modern wedges which have been encrusted with diamante.

Delhi designer Varun Bahl will be opening the PCJ Delhi Couture Week on 8 August. Sabyasachi Mukherjee will be bringing about the grand finale.
