In the notification issued on Friday, the election commission has accepted the request of chief election officer to increase polling by two hours to facilitate voters.
‘We hope the poll percentage in the city will go above 60 per cent this time from 53 percent polling in the previous 2009 Lok Sabha election,’ said Vijay Dev, CEO of Delhi.
In its notification on Friday, the poll panel announced that voting in the city would start at 7 am on 10 April and continue till 6 pm. Earlier poll timings were from 8 am to 5 pm. In the recently concluded Delhi assembly polls, the state unit of the poll panel ensured a record 66 per cent turnout of voters. In the previous assembly elections, voter turnout was at 58 per cent.
‘In the recently concluded Delhi assembly elections, we had increased poll time up to 8 pm to ensure every person standing in the queue casts his vote. I think the increase in timing and same date of polling for Delhi and entire National Capital Region (NCR) will ensure a high poll percentage,’ he added.
The election commission has also increased poll duration for Lok Sabha polls in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. This step means that entire Delhi and NCR voters will get more time to casts their votes. The same date of poll for entire NCR region has also been chosen to make the election hassle free and also prevent duplication of votes.
