After working for around 17 years on a temporary basis for Delhi University, hope of finding a permanent position with the varsity as an assistant professor is still alive for Nalini Prabhakar.
The case of the 49-year-old professor has been listed for discussion in the Executive Council (EC) meet, which is scheduled to be held on Saturday.
Prabhakar has been serving the university as an assistant professor of English at the School of Open Learning.
A DU official on condition of anonymity said, ‘The School of Correspondence Courses advertised five posts for lecturers (two permanent and three temporary) on 8 August, 1995. A selection committee met on 9 February, 1996, and selected Prabhakar and placed her at No. 5 on the merit list for permanent posts and at No. 3 for the temporary posts. Prabhakar joined the college on temporary basis on 17 July, 1996 till further orders and has been working as a temporary lecturer at the college without a break for more than 17 years now. Her work record and conduct has been satisfactory. The EC regularised the services of Dr Tapan Biswal, who was working at the college in a similar capacity on 19 February 2000.’
‘Prabhakar made a representation to the managing committee of the college in 2002 to regularise her services. The committee turned down her request. She made a representation again in 2002. The committee recognised that her case was similar to Dr. Biswal. The committee then recommended the regularisation of her services and sent it to the Executive Council for approval.
The council, however, turned down this recommendation without assigning any reason,’ he added.
With no help in sight, Prabhakar approached the high court. The court directed the college and university authorities to regularise Prabhakar’s services in 2012.
The university filed a review on 14 January, 2013. Abha Dev Habib, Executive Council member of DU said, ‘Prabhakar’s case is being listed for the EC meet. University should favourably regularise her job because her appointment was made properly.’
