AAP to organise event addressing auto and taxi driver’s concerns

Update: 2014-02-04 00:23 GMT
The announcement may be made on or before 7 February, when the AAP government organises a Mahasabha (general assembly) of auto and tax drivers at Buruari.

Besides, the government may also make some crucial announcements for auto and taxi drivers including simplification of license, badge process and giving them relief  from alleged harassment by traffic police.

Interestingly, the transport department is advertising the event to attract maximum number of auto and taxi drivers. However, invitations have not been sent to their associations.

According to sources, it is a well calculated move of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) government to establish a direct link with drivers as unions have political affiliations.

‘It’s a function of Delhi government, which is being publicised through posters on autos and various places in the city. They have not send invitation to any of the auto unions,’ said Rajender Soni, president of Delhi auto and taxi union, an arm of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). BMS is considered to be close to the BJP.

According to sources, the auto wing of AAP is organising the event, under the leadership of Sanjay Chawala, who has been given a helpline number to aid auto drivers in distress. The auto-drivers in the city have been demanding the government to do away with the provision of challans by Delhi traffic police or else provide some relief from harassment by traffic police. There are around 80,000 auto drivers and 12,000 taxi drivers in the city.
