A resolution for Swaraj Abhiyan, a nationwide movement, was passed through voting in the meeting. Dissidents within AAP have decided to delay the split and struggle while remaining with the party.
However, a number of AAP leaders and members stayed away from the meeting. Some chose to express solidarity through letters instead. Those who stayed away from the event included retired Admiral L. Ramdas, who was recently removed as the party’s Lokpal, AAP’s Patiala MP Dharamvir Gandhi, former party leader Christina Samy and social activists Aruna Roy and Medha Patkar, among others.
According to sources, the absentees either cited ill-health or personal commitments for not attending the event, which has been described as an effort to break the party by leaders close to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
“Your Lokpal and four senior founding members of AAP found themselves ousted from their positions in the party. Such actions have undermined the faith and hopes of millions of supporters,” said Ramdas, in a statement.
In the letter, addressed to volunteers, Gandhi stressed on the need to work towards strengthening the party’s core ideals.
Ahead of the meeting, Yadav said it was a “day for new beginning” and the meeting was a “dialogue on alternative politics”.
“We demanded that Lokpal should be made in each state with final decisions taken by the national Lokpal, but the party leadership has denied it. Now, we hear that as we have organised this dialogue, we have been removed from the party,” said Bhushan.
