4 yrs since its inception, only ‘few’ schools teach media studies

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced ‘Mass Media Studies’ as elective subject at senior secondary level in 2010-11. But it has come to light that only ‘handful’ of private schools are teaching the subject.

Shockingly, even after four years of its introduction, no government school in the Capital offer the subject.

“Schools are very careless about students’ welfare. CBSE issue circulars but the schools tend to ignore it. If any student wants to study the subject, he is often asked to go to another school. But the problem is, not many schools offer the subject. So the students have no choice’, said a member of governing body of a school requesting anonymity.

There are 1,037 government schools in the city and around 2,500 registered private schools. “The students will have options if the subject is implemented in schools. Also, it will create over thousand jobs for teachers”, said DK Taneja, said a member of Delhi Parents Association.

According to the CBSE circular dated February 2012, it stated that CBSE has introduced Mass Media Studies as an elective subject at senior secondary level from 2010-11 on pilot basis in some selected schools.

After the success of pilot, the CBSE decided to make the subject available in all schools from the academic session 2012-13.

While schools may be keeping their students choices restricted, a principal of a government school in Mukherjee Nagar refused to comment on why they were not teaching mass media studies to its students.
