The herbal medicine is best suitable for those who are not dependent on insulin injections.

In response to a written query raised by Rajya Sabha member Jharna Das Baidya, the minister said, "The drug has been jointly developed by Lucknow-based CSIR's laboratories -- Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants and National Botanical Research Institute."

"The know-how for the product was licensed to AIMIL Pharma which is manufacturing and marketing it as BGR-34," Naik said.

On the development, former senior NBRI scientist AKS Rawat, who has played a key role in developing the BGR-34, said that the minister's statement on the anti-diabetic herbal drug reflects the faith that the product has earned over the years among the patients suffering from type 2 diabetes.
