Rather, the health ministry has curiously decided to keep under wraps the deficiencies of few medical colleges owned/managed by political honchos or business magnets.
The MCI’s letter of recommendation to derecognise colleges with deficiencies uploaded on health ministry’s website does not have names of all derecognised medical colleges. The MCI has reported deficiencies found during the day of assessment in detail to ministry of health pushing for derecognistion of the rule violators.
Some of the colleges which have been ‘protected’ on the ministry website belong to political honchos as well as business magnets. One of the colleges which is not in the list on health ministry’s website is Subharti Medical College in Meerut. The college is a regular offender as MCI has recommended for its derecognition in the year 2013 too. Swami Vivekanand Subharti University’s maiden college is managed by Atul Bhatnagar, who is learnt to have close relations with politicians. Reportedly, Bhatnagar enjoys the blessings of Pradeep Kumar Jain ‘Aditya’, who was minister of state in ministry of rural development in the UPA government, and BSP supremo Mayawati’s confidant Munkad Ali.
Other colleges of Uttar Pradesh, where BJP has won 71 seats alone in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, are Rohilkhand Medical College, Bareilly. Rohilkhand Medical College is managed by Keshav Agarwal, a cancer surgeon. Reportedly, Agarwal has also contested assembly elections during 90s on Congress ticket.
Mayo Institute of Medical Sciences, Barabanki is also not on the website. The college is managed by Madhulika Singh, who is learnt to be close to union home minister Rajnath Singh. The medical college is a part of Bodhisatva Charitable Trust.
The ministry also kept under wrap deficiencies of Bihar’s Lord Budhha Koshi Medical College and Hospital, Saharsa.
The college, which is promoted by Saharsa-based doctors PK Singh and Kalyani Singh, has the blessings of stalwarts of Koshi region -- Vijendra Yadav and Narendra Yadav, ministers in Bihar government.
The details of deficiencies of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Wardha (Maharashtra) also doesn’t figure on the website. The college is a part of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, whose holding trustees are former PM Manmohan Singh and Rajshree Birla, Director of Board of Aditya Group of Birla.
JSS Medical College, Mysore (Karnataka) also doesn’t figure on the ministry website though its in the list of the derecognised colleges.
The member on board of this college is MV Raja Sekharan, former union minister of state for planning.
Another such institution to find protection is Al-Ameen Medical College, Bijapur (Karnataka). Its chairman Ziaulla Sheriff is a Bangalore-based builder also Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of StarCom Information Technology Limited.
