Will not let Mamata down, says confident Mimi
Kolkata: Within 24 hours of being nominated from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat, noted actor Mimi Chakraborty started her election campaign in full swing on Wednesday morning.
She was accompanied by state Public Works department minister and Tollygunge MLA Aroop Biswas. Later in the day, party supremo Mamata Banerjee met all 42 nominees and discussed the poll strategy with them. Chakraborty shot to fame for her roles in popular Tollywood movies like Criss Cross, Dhananjay and Posto.
When asked whether she was feeling nervous about facing the first election in her life, Chakraborty said: "When Mamata di has selected me for the seat, I will never let her down. I will seek the blessing of the people of Jadavpur, work for them and stand by them in their hour of need." The name of Mamata Banerjee had become a household name in Bengal, after she defeated Somnath Chatterjee in the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat in 1984. CPI(M)'s Malini Bhattacharya, a teacher of English in Jadavpur University, was an MP from Jadavpur. Krishna Basu and her son Sugata were also MPs from the seat. Jadavpur was the Assembly constituency of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee as well.
The seven constituencies under Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat are Tollygunge, Sonarpur North, Jadavpur, Bhangar, Sonarpur South, Baruipur West and Baruipur (SC) East. The Left-Congress alliance and BJP are yet to announce their candidates in Jadavpur, where CPI(M)'s Sujan Chakraborty was defeated by Sugata Bose in 2014.
Aroop Biswas said though the campaign for Mimi has just begun, the response of the people is very positive. "It will pick up further with time. All the Assembly segments will be covered and Mimi has tremendous popularity in the rural belt," he added.
